The role of the ABC Advisory Council in the era of opinion

Anita Planchon is the chair of the ABC Advisory Council. Anita grew up in Adelaide and now lives in Nipaluna/Hobart where she is a senior executive with the Department of Health. She has held various roles with the Tasmanian State Government including in libraries and literacy, most recently leading statewide literacy teaching reform for the Department for Education, Children and Young People. She was chair of the Australian Media Literacy Alliance from 2024-2025 and is deeply committed to combating misinformation and disinformation and building critical thinking across the Australia community.  

Anita was previously an Australian diplomat for two decades with postings in Asia and the Pacific, including as Australia’s Consul-General to Noumea and Deputy High Commissioner to Honiara. 

Anita is an active community member with interests across the arts, sport and the environment. She is also mother to two teenagers who recognised the ABC logo before they could read. 

She is a lifelong consumer of the ABC across various platforms and a passionate supporter of public broadcasting.

Anita's talk will be followed by a delicious home cooked light lunch for only $15, but RSVP essential. Pay by cash on the day.
